Piste To Powder – AMAZING BLUEBIRD TOURING DAYS

13.03.2016

As we enter March, we are rewarded with perfect bluebird days and excellent conditions for touring. Those unfamiliar with hiking, will be pleasantly surprised to find it is not limited to bearded mountain men – in fact even with no experience of skinning and a regular level of fitness touring is something everyone can try and should try once!

Our Open groups this week were all venturing out, and enjoying the sunshine and the still untracked soft snow that lies beyond the piste or close to the piste. This is real off piste adventure in the Arlberg. Our Level 2 group set off mid morning on a short 40 minute skin at the back of Stuben to Peischl, a wind protected bowl where great powder is found. Piste to Powder guide Magnus explained how it is all about developing a rhythm, not too fast but a pace that you can talk comfortably at. And he showed us an effort saving technique for lifting the boot but leaving the ski always connected to the snow. We set off in our small group, admiring the spectacular scenery, the peace and tranquility far away from the crowds.

From the summit which afforded stunning views, we descended firstly a short steeper North East facing slope with excellent snow, then traversed a short section before descending towards st Christoph. The small effort was well worth it for the final reward of still soft and untracked snow and smiling faces all round!

If you are interested in joining one of our open groups or go for a private off piste session,  just fill in our enquiry form and let the adventure start!
